Our state-of-the-art fitness room overlooks one of the most beautiful vistas in Charlottesville. Maximize your workout with ellipticals, arc trainers, treadmills, steppers, bikes, free weights, a power rack and Cybex equipment. Our certified fitness professionals--including two exercise physiologists--are here to assist you in achieving your personal best. While using our cardiovascular equipment, Cardio Theatre is available for your entertainment.
Please ask the fitness staff for assistance when needed. We do recommend that everyone meet with a personal trainer at least once. Floor staff is available to assist you Monday through Friday from 6:00 – 9:00am and from 4:30 – 7:00pm as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from 7:00am – 6:00pm.
PERSONAL TRAINING
Personal Training is designed to meet your individual goals and needs! It's a great way to get and stay motivated. Our dedication to each and every client allows you to maximize your efforts while having the constant support of a trained professional.
The cost of personal training is dependent upon the duration of the session and the number of people training at one time. For more information or to make an appointment, please contact the Fitness Office at (434) 972-2237 ext. 5020.
We do implement a 24-hour cancellation policy for all personal training sessions, nutrition sessions, pilates private sessions as well as pilates reformer classes.
STAFF
Phyllis Ellerman, M.Ed., C.S.C.S.
Phyllis is our Fitness Director and an Exercise Physiologist. She received her bachelor's degree in Business from the University of Maryland with a dual major in Marketing and Finance. Phyllis obtained her master's degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Virginia, with coursework in cardiac rehabilitation, adult fitness, athletic injuries, pharmacology, physiology, and metabolic adaptations to exercise. She has experience training all age groups and fitness levels from sports conditioning to seniors to neuromuscular disorders to post-rehab and cardiac rehab. She is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, a certified aerobics instructor, as well as a STOTT PILATES* certified instructor.
Rob Vorhees, M.Ed., C.S.C.S.
Rob is our Head Personal Trainer and an Exercise Physiologist. His area of expertise is identifying and addressing muscular imbalances. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary in Kinesiology where he was the assistant to the head strength and conditioning coach. He completed his master's degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Virginia. Rob is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with extensive experience in strength conditioning, post rehabilitation, and cardiac rehabilitation. Rob is a competitive skeet shooter.
Wendy Hudspeth
Wendy is one of our personal trainers and one of our exercise class instructors. She has a bachelor's degree from The University of Virginia in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sports Medicine. In addition, Wendy worked at the Charlottesville ACAC Physical Therapy clinic and the McCue Sports Medicine Center at UVA. Wendy teaches water aerobics and has experience coaching both gymnastics and cheerleading for ages 4-18. She has experience working with a variety of age ranges and training needs, from senior physical therapy rehab to athletic conditioning and rehab workouts for collegiate athletes. Wendy is highly energetic and excited to help others with their exercising endeavors.
James Hunter
James is one of our Personal Trainers. He is a certified Health Fitness Specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia in Sports Medicine with a focus in Kinesiology. James has a wide range of experience in the fitness field from training collegiate athletes to post therapy clients to functional fitness for the elderly. He is an always eager teacher who enjoys helping out others when he can. His free time is spent playing disc golf, practicing Tai Chi, playing paintball and occasionally tinkering with his personal computer.
GROUP EXERCISE
Enjoy the camaraderie of exercise classes with certified aerobics instructors. Boar's Head offers three exercise studios with choices of over 50 classes per week, including Zumba, Pilates, step, interval training, strength, water aerobics, yoga and cycle classes. Fees apply (classes are free for club members).

We are happy to help you determine which classes meet your fitness needs. Please note that holidays do affect our class offerings at the following times: New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These changes can be found on our website and on flyers posted throughout the Club.
If you are attending a group exercise class for the first time, please notify the instructor. He/she will help guide you through your first class so that you feel comfortable and are able to gain the most benefit.Please be sure to sign the attendance sheet posted on the clipboard located in each exercise studio every time you participate in a class. For your safety and the consideration of others, please arrive for class on-time.
Pilates one-on-one sessions are required before attending our group classes. Please contact one of the fitness staff for more information.
WATER AEROBICS
Water aerobics runs Monday, June 7 through Saturday, September 10, 2010.
Classes are:
Monday - Friday: 8:00-9:00am
Monday & Wednesday: 12:00-1:00pm
Tuesday & Thursday: 5:45-6:45pm
Saturday: 9:00-10:00am
The decision to cancel a water aerobics class for inclement weather will be made 30 minutes prior to the start of class. Please call (434) 244-2421 for cancellation information.
PILATES
Boar's Head Sports Club is pleased to announce that STOTT PILATES mat and reformer classes are available. One-on-one sessions, 3-4 person group reformer sessions as well as mat classes are currently offered. For a list of current mat class times, please refer to the current exercise schedule on-line or pick one up at the Club.

Pilates reformers may only be used under the supervision of a Boar's Head pilates instructor.
TEEN WORKOUT
Teens between the ages of 12 and 15 are permitted in the fitness room ONLY:
- During scheduled Teen Workouts for 12-15 year olds (see below);
- During a Personal Training session with one of our trainers; or
- If the teen is certified (see below) AND a parent is present.
Any teen under the age of 16 may take an exercise class as long as:
- The parent/legal guardian signs a waiver AND
- The parent/legal guardian takes the class with the teen.
TEEN WORKOUT for 12-15 Year Olds
We believe that children and young adults should be physically fit. As advocates for fitness, we established the Teen Workout program for children 12 to 15 years of age. Our qualified staff oversees Teen Workout to instruct teens on the proper use of equipment, document correct seat adjustments, and record the appropriate resistance amounts. The goal of Teen Workout is certification, which allows a teen to use the fitness room whenever a parent is present. In order to use the workout room before the age of 16, Teen Workout participation is required. If attending Teen Workout for the first time, a parent or legal guardian must sign a waiver before participating.

Please note that Teen Workout will NOT be held on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.
TEEN CERTIFICATION
A teen needs only to attend Teen Workout six times before taking a certification test, administered by one of our trainers. Once certified, teens can workout whenever a parent is present.
INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
For information on exercise class cancellations due to inclement weather, please call the fitness office at (434) 244-2421. For weekday morning classes, cancellations follow Albemarle County Schools. If Albemarle County Schools are closed OR are delayed in opening, then all classes BEFORE 10:30 a.m. are CANCELLED. Call (434) 244-2421 for information pertaining to the cancellation of all other exercise classes.
