Boar's Head is a great place to improve your game.  Our staff of USPTR and USPTA certified instructors are focused on providing you superior instruction that will help you enjoy the sport, stay healthy and win more on the court.  We have specialists ready to help Adults, Juniors, Seniors and even the littlest players.  Enjoy one of our Clinics for Adults, our Afterschool Junior Development Program or our Summer Junior Camps.  Regardless of your pursuit, you will be welcomed to the courts by a friendly, knowledgeable instructor who will be eager to help you improve. In addition to clinics, private and group lessons are available tailored to your specific needs.

Boar's Head has a well rounded staff with exceptional tennis experience.  Our staff is comprised of Instructors who have played and coached at the highest levels.  In seeking the right instructor, you will find former USTA ranked players, NCAA collegiate players and coaches and even some with ATP/WTA tour coaching experience.  Each instructor comes to court with a passion for teaching.  Their individual personalities and knowledge of the game are at your service, helping you learn confidently and enjoy the game for life.  Whether you have questions about technique, tactics, fitness or the mental game, you can find your answers here. 

Jacek Wolicki: Director of Tennis
As the Director of Tennis, Jacek Wolicki oversees all tennis programming and our team of tennis professionals at the club.  Before joining Boar’s Head, Jacek served on the executive team as head of operations for Mamba International, a sports management company focused on the representation and development of professional athletes.  Wolicki worked with several professional tennis players, including Somdev Devvarman and Alexandra Wozniak.  Jacek has experience coaching in the collegiate ranks as the Head Men’s Tennis Coach at Bradley University, as well as assistant coaching roles at Western Michigan University and here at the University of Virginia.  Jacek possesses a great deal of experience working in junior development programs and tennis camps.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Nebraska, where he also played on the varsity tennis team.

Ron Manilla: Tournament Director
As a teaching professional with more than 30 years’ experience, Ron Manilla has made a tremendous impact on the tennis communities at Boar’s Head Sports Club and in the Charlottesville Area.  Through tennis, Ron has touched the lives of many players around Charlottesville, including his own children, leading to honors and accolades including:
2002 PTR Virginia Member of the Year, and, 2008 USTA Virginia Family of the Year in 2008. In February of 2010, Ron received the Professional Tennis Registry’s highest honor, Master Professional.  He is one of only 31 in the world to receive this designation. Ron’s current priority is the direction of tennis tournaments at BHSC, including the Boyd Tinsley Clay Court Classic, the Charlottesville Men’s Pro Challenger, Special Olympics “Xperience, ” and numerous USTA junior tournaments. Ron is a member of the Head/Penn Advisory Staff and president of the Charlottesville Area Tennis Association.
Tristan Venables: High-Performance Junior Coordinator
Tristan was a top-ten ranked junior tennis player in Australia.  He played at the University of Denver, where he earned the MVP award and was granted the number one position. After college and following a brief stint competing on the ATP Pro Circuit, Tristan shifted his focus to coaching and player development. He participated in the High Performance Coaching Qualification and was a learner-facilitator for Tennis Australia for two years.  He spent 12 years as the Director of Tennis/Head Pro at Wembley Downs Tennis Club in his hometown of Perth, Western Australia.  More recently, Tristan spent two years working with the University of Georgia Men's Tennis program and last year served as the Women's Tennis Assistant Coach with the Louisiana State University Tigers.  Tristan's wife Jessica is from Athens, Georgia, and they have two children, Jonah and Milla.

Betsy Nugent
Betsy has been teaching tennis in the Charlottesville area for more than 10 years.  Her experience at Boar’s Head Sports Club includes teaching private lessons and adult and junior clinics, as well as assisting with in-house leagues and tennis events.  Betsy has also been active in coordinating USTA leagues.  She has a special interest in promoting tennis in the Charlottesville-Albemarle community and has assisted in implementing the QuickStart and high school development programs for Albemarle County. Her passion for teaching juniors has kept her in good stead as she has coached girls high school teams both at Western Albemarle and at Saint Anne’s-Belfield for the past eleven years.  Betsy is a certified USPTR instructor and competes at the 4.5 level in the Charlottesville community.

George Elias
George’s passion for the game and his 20 years’ experience as a teaching pro in Northern Virginia have served him well.  He was the head pro at Wintergreen Resort and worked at Westwood Country Club and the Four Seasons Tennis Club.  While at the Four Seasons, George served with Bob Pass in guiding a successful national caliber junior program that produced several notable NCAA Division I players.  At Westwood Country Club, he guided all aspects of club tennis, including a successful USTA ladies 3.5 team that competed at districts 9 out of 10 years.  George is a thorough and thoughtful teacher who helps you improve your game.  George played college tennis at Birmingham Southern College.

Robyn Russell
Robyn has spent more than 30 years coaching and teaching the game of tennis.  As a college coach, Robyn guided Young Harris College in Georgia for 10 years.  Her team qualified for Nationals nine out of 10 years, won five regional titles and earned five Coach of the Year honors. In the club environment, Robyn has spent a great deal of time guiding adult players on ALTA and USTA league teams. In the past Robyn taught at the Atlanta County Club as well as a previous stint at BHSC from 1987-1990. Robyn is certified both by the USPTA and USPTR.
She played college tennis at James Madison University and is nationally ranked in the top 25 in the singles division of USTA women’s senior tennis. Robyn continues to compete around the nation.

Tamar Kravatskhelia
Originally from Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, Tamar came to the U.S. in 2004 after accepting a full scholarship from Division 1 Kansas State University.  During the past few years, Tamar has worked at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park, MD, and Westwood Country Club in Richmond, VA.  She has a proven proficiency with players of all ages and levels.  Tamar’s accomplishments as a junior player include more than 10 successful years of international ITF competitive experience.  While earning her Bachelor of Art and Science degree at Kansas State, she was the most victorious freshman in the Big 12 in 2004-2005 and received All-Conference Big 12 singles designations in 2005 and 2006. Tamar currently holds a USTA rating of 6.0.

If you are a fan of tennis, you will also delight in watching world class NCAA collegiate and ATP/WTA professional players train and compete at the club.  The Boar's Head is host to both a Men's and a Women's USTA Pro Circuit tournament, the University of Virginia Teams, ITA/NCAA Collegiate Championships as well as countless USTA Junior and Adult events.  We are also proud to host "The Xperience" an International Tournament for some of the world's best Special Olympics athletes.

Since 2002, Boar's Head has been named a Top 50 U.S. Tennis Resort by Tennis Magazine. In addition to maintaining this Top 50 designation, in 2012, the resort was recognized by Tennis Magazine as the #1 Tennis Destination in the Mid-Atlantic region.  With 26 courts, our facility stands out as one of the world's best in tennis. 10 Outdoor Har-Tru courts are carefully maintained for seasonal play and host some of the world's best women from the WTA tour each spring. Alongside our clay, are an additional four Outdoor DecoTurf hard courts for year round play. Inside you will find a massive 12 DecoTurf hard courts complex, which plays to the high standards of the ITA, ATP and NCAA and serves as the host site of top tournaments.  A six court tennis stadium holds over 1500 for viewing of tournaments and collegiate matches. All of this is complimented with locker rooms and a sports café.

Court reservations begin at 8:00 am one week in advance for Indoor play and 48 hours ahead for Outdoor Play.  All bookings are made through The Boar's Head Desk staff.  Appropriate tennis attire is expected and court shoes are required.  All players are required to check in at the desk to confirm their court assignments upon arrival. Tennis etiquette and good sportsmanship are to be observed and appreciated as we strive to maintain a friendly atmosphere for tennis at Boar's Head.

(Court Assignment Procedure - CAP)
For members, courts may be reserved on a seasonal basis through the CAP program.  This lottery system assigns a weekly standing reservation to a group who commits to using the court and paying any court expenses.

In-House league are offered each season for singles and doubles at popular USTA levels of play. Boar's Head commonly has leagues for 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 players. In-House leagues are a great way to meet other members and secure a weekly match against others of similar ability. The Boar's Head also offers the Box League, a form of a ladder, to all of our members. Members may choose to compete in doubles or singles play. After a pre-determined amount of time participants move up and down the ladder based on how well they did against the opponents in their "Box".

We are pleased to offer a full palate of clinics and instruction for Adult and Senior players.  Most clinics are offered in one-hour blocks.  On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 9:00 am you can get on court for an Intermediate Clinic, our best all-around clinic which covers technique, tactics and point play. 

We also offer a Beginner Clinic for those who want to start off learning on the right foot and build the foundations of their game.  Our Boar's Head Senior Clinics are very popular among those who have found tennis to be a lifelong companion or a passion later in life, a tribute to the health and wellness benefits tennis offers.  For those looking to sweat and get their hearts pumping, The Boar's Head Drills for Thrills or Cardio Clinic is aimed at targeting tennis fitness and is an exceptional hour of hitting hundreds of balls while constantly on the move!

Boar's Head offers an incredible amount of USTA League tennis for Adults.  Housing nearly 50 teams for USTA League play at the 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels The Boar's Head is very active in USTA and had success at the District, Regional and National levels.  Men's, Women's, Mixed, Senior, Tri-Level, Singles, and Combo teams all make The Boar's Head their home as they compete with others in the area.  Additionally, every January the USTA hosts its Commonwealth Games for USTA competition allowing our teams to have home court advantage as they compete during the winter.

This is a great opportunity for children and developing players. Programs like QuickStart are available for players ages 10 and under, focusing on all of the basic skills needs for future success in tennis in a fun atmosphere.

Our Afterschool Junior Development Program is a tiered program offering training for young players at beginning, intermediate, advanced and tournament levels of play.  This program teaches the foundations of the game and is excellent for preparing those interested in tennis playing scholastic and USTA tennis. This program is divided into two main categories, Recreational and Tournament Prep.

The ELITE Junior Program is a unique comprehensive program offered to the most dedicated players who seek success in tournament play and have ambitions of National and International Rankings. This program is by invitation and combines advanced clinics and private coaching for those who desire to take their play to the highest levels. Our Tennis Staff involved in this program have coached at the highest levels of the sport including at the Collegiate and Tour levels.

In the summer we offer an outstanding Summer Tennis Academy and also organize team tennis for our Juniors who then compete in the local area Jefferson League.  The summer experience allows for 3 hours of daily training and matchplay.
